Mumford & Sons Gentlemen of the Road: Portland Stopover
Saturday, August 4
Eastern Promenade
The highly buzzed-about Mumford and Sons festival is fast approaching. On Saturday, August 4, 2012, thousands of fans will gather on the Eastern Promenade to see the Grammy-nominated British folk rock band along with a lineup of other musical acts, including St. Vincent, Dawes and the Maccabees.
Mumford and Sons chose Portland as one of a limited number of sites for its U.S. Gentlemen of the Road Stopover tour. All 15,000 tickets for the event are sold out.
The festival site, which will be enclosed by a tall fence, will include the portion of the park above Cutter Street between Turner and Moody streets, with the main stage located in the middle parking lot. Gates will open at noon, with music ending at 9 pm. Munjoy Hill will be closed off to non-resident vehicles beginning at 11 am on the day of the concert. Cutter Street and the East End Beach Boat Ramp will be closed to all traffic beginning at 10 am.
Friends of the Eastern Promenade and the Munjoy Hill Neighborhood Organization support the festival and have been working with the city and event organizers to represent the interests of the park and the neighborhood. A portion of the ticket sales will benefit Friends of the Eastern Promenade.
“The Eastern Promenade offers a most perfect venue for an event such as this,” says Diane Davison, President of Friends of the Eastern Promenade. “While we acknowledge the interruption of access to the water and the large grassy slopes dedicated to this event, we hope most will favor the opportunity to share our park on a much more grand scale. People from all over New England will embark on the City of Portland this weekend to enjoy this outdoor extravaganza. It looks like we have Mother Nature’s blessing, and we’re really looking forward to this event.”
