About Chandler’s Band
Generations of Portlanders have fond memories of gathering around the Fort Allen Park bandstand to hear Chandler’s Band play familiar tunes from the big-band era.

Chandler’s Band started out as the Portland Band in 1833, when Portland was a developing port city with a population of 13,000. The determined and talented Daniel Chandler took over as band leader 10 years later and eventually renamed the group after himself.

During the Civil War, the band served as the First Regimental Band, returning to Portland after the war. Under Daniel Chandler’s direction, the band became Maine’s most prestigious band, playing in cities throughout the Northeast. An incredible 179 years later, Chandler’s Band is thought to be the nation’s second-oldest professional band in continuous service.

Current band members work all around Maine at hospitals, schools, post offices, in the sales and technology fields, as well as serving our country, coming together to play marching music for all to enjoy.

Admire the beautiful scenery of Casco Bay from Fort Allen Park and let Chandler’s Band take you back in time.
